Notice: Frank Cavazos Model Craft is Missing-in-Action

Oh where, oh where has Frank gone?

Well, until Frank emerges from the rough, go out there and find a Boomerang as some are around in some stores and on EBay.
Or, you can get your hands on the best replacement (or possibly better, sorry Frank), Combat Wings' XR.

Frank Cavazos' Boomerang

Boomerang Picture

Throught its inception, the Boomerang was designed to incorporate some of the best flying combinations into a single flying wing and the result has been very successful. I think a few of the main reasons for its success is a combination of an extremely light flying weight for a combat wing, and a fast semi-symmetrical airfoil, cut to an optimum wing platform, that has been refined again and again in combat.

The wing is nearly 1/2 pound lighter than its most popular competitor, and flies through the air, not with the air. It's no wonder John Roe had to have one, he has grown weary of being out gunned by the 16 oz. Boomerang wings on those light air combat days.

This low weight is absolutely essential to be competitive, especially in the typical contest conditions found in South Orange County, California.

John Roe's 16.0 oz. wing uses 2 Airtronics 94141 servos, a Hitec receiver and short sanyo 600mAh NiCads (kr-600ae) and reinforced with strapping tape then poly (packing) tape covered. Some past wins from summer of '97 are 1st at Poway, California; 1st at ISR Riverside, Ca.; 1st at LSSS Riverside by Jeff Mellon, and 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th places by various other people.

Throughout it's short history its become the wing of choice among pilots who want more performance and have the flying skills from intermediate through advanced.

Boomerang Specifications
Wing Span: 48 in.
Wing Area: 479 sq. in.
Wing Loading: 4.8 - 5.4 oz./ sq. ft.
Weight: 16 (combat flying weight) - 18 oz.
Construction: EPP Foam & Composite spar
Build Time: 4 - 5 Hours

These are currently the "right" numbers to put you in the winners circle.

There are two versions of the Boomerang kit. The latest version has ALL EPP (Expanded Polypropylene foam) wings with a composite spar. Previous versions (still great in combat) were composed of pre-cut blue foam wing cores with EPP leading edges.

Both Boomerang kits feature: pre-cut foam wing cores, pre-cut white "coroplast" wing tiplets, pre-cut 1/8" balsa elevons, R/C links and rods, complete hardware package and illustrated instruction manual.

To finish the kit you will need a 500-600 mAh square battery pack, 2 standard size servos, an electronic mixing radio, 2" strapping reinforcing tape, some 5 minute epoxy, spray 3M 77 adhesive and basic hobby tools.

Since Frank's Boomerang is out of production for now, the closest thing I know that matches the Boomerang is Weston's Combat Wing's XR.

Comment from Fatlion: Well, I've now had my Boomerang for many 'killer' months now, and I just have to agree with everything that everyone's been saying about the Boomerang. It is really a great combat aircraft. Its ability to quickly recover after being 'whacked' in the air is its real strong point. I can continually down other planes over and over and each time pull out before disaster (er, hitting the ground). My Boomerang is my 'staple airplane' that I always depend on in a combat session. Ask someone who flies one and you'll probably get the same answer...

I guess I'll have to get out here and get my hands on a new Combat XR to be sure... :)
